Local Printing History
The first printer in Maryland was William Nuthead. He came to Maryland after being driven out of Virginia by the Royal Governor. Apparently the Governor thought that printing would lead to knowledge which would lead to discontent. When Mr. Nuthead died in 1685 his wife, Diana, took over the business and became the first licensed female printer in America. All this took place
right here in St. Mary's County!
